Copper Rise Consulting

Sharing our learning, insights and practical tips

Have you ever been frustrated by working hard to improve or grow your organization, only to find that the morale of your employees has plummeted?  It is a headache many leaders face. Where do you put your energies, into the efforts that will grow, save or improve the business or taking the time to fight the employee fires in the office or shop?   Sometimes it is easier for leaders to see the big picture and charge ahead; however using a little time up front to address the needs of the different personality types in your organization can minimize disruptions later. We are all born with preferences that drive how we view and adapt to change; leaders who try to tap into these preferences have a better chance of gaining support and commitment from their organization for the changes.

If you are planning changes, or are dealing with employee issues while implementing current changes (its never too late), here’s some suggestions on how to present the plans to people.  Try answering all these questions when you communicate: Why is the change necessary? What is the theory or concept behind the change? What is the expected outcome of the change (good and bad)? How can they get involved? (Note: Being involved is more than “your continued hard work” – be more specific).  (Interested in learning more about personality types? – contact Copper Rise Consulting – we provide both individual assessments and workshops in the Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator)

A Practical Tip – Are Your Policies Patriotic?

As the war on terrorism wages on, it may be a good time to review your policies on military, reservist and National Guard duty. While most employers support employees called to duty, not everyone is aware that these employees may also have reinstatement and/or benefit continuation/accrual rights while they are away. The rights vary based on the reason for the military related absence, but can include the right to an unpaid leave of absence for up to 4 years (sometimes 5 years) for enlistment or induction into the military.  The national laws date back to World War I, and became prominent after the Viet Nam Conflict – they are meant to protect those who serve our country from returning home to unemployment.

About Copper Rise Consulting

People have often asked where the name “Copper Rise Consulting” originates.  It is actually the name of the forested 5 acres that gently slopes towards (or “rises” away from) the bordering Copper Creek. It is where Sandy Barnes, founder and owner, lives and operates the business. The name has significance in that it reflects certain values important to us – finding bliss in one’s chosen work and the achievement of goals.

Copper Rise Consulting provides a full range of organization development, human resources and facilitation services.  As these newsletters are distributed over the next few months, examples of the firm’s projects and accomplishments will be shared to give you a sense of our capabilities. We have developed compensation, performance review and employment programs, drafted policies and handbooks, conducted team building and planning workshops – and recently completed writing 3 scenarios about the future of Cowlitz County.
