Services include leadership development workshops/retreats, leadership coaching, leadership training, organizational assessments and needs analysis, employee focus groups, team building workshops/retreats, MBTI (personality type) assessments and workshops, communication and conflict resolution workshops, mediation and strategic business planning facilitation.  Programs include development of both “soft skills” such as teamwork, communication, conflict resolution, and visioning, and practical group process skills such as problem solving, decision-making, priority setting, effective meetings, facilitation skills and consensus building.

Sample Projects

Organizational Development

“We could not have done it without you” – President, Division of an International Steel Company

A small regional airport was growing significantly in revenue, but had insufficient/unskilled staff and a director at odds with board members. After staff and board interviews, goals and objectives were identified, a staffing growth plan for both employees and board members was written and new policies were implemented to set up this organization for ongoing success.  The board attended a session to learn how to become more supportive of the new organization, staff and each other.

A fast growing Internet business requested a new way of compensating employees; however it was soon discovered that the base of their issues had little to do with money – it had to do with unclear values and expectations.   After Copper Rise Consulting conducted an organizational assessment, we helped the manager develop and articulate a  clear vision.  Next, we facilitated a team of employees through defining values and behavioral expectations. Based on this work, a core compensation and an incentive program were developed that reflected the vision and the values of the organization.

Leadership Development

Thank you for the inspiration you have given us through your work” – Client Feedback

“(Your workshop) made me more comfortable to be myself in a manager position, which is important because employees feed off of our confidence.”  - Workshop Participant

Since 1998, Copper Rise Consulting has conducted the initial session of the Lower Columbia Leadership Academy, a program sponsored by the local Chamber of Commerce.  Through Sandy’s facilitation and introduction of personality type and practical communication tools, over 200 community leaders have learned their natural leadership style and made impacts on many different programs.

A regional laboratory in a national corporation was struggling with non-profitability; the leadership team was unsure of roles, were overwhelmed by their challenges, and were given a deadline for improvement. Copper Rise Consulting worked with the leadership team to regain their commitment, discover their strengths, and become a cohesive team and to prioritize their tasks.  The team was given and actively applied tools for engaging their workforce – and through coaching made some tough decisions.  The lab is now heralded as a company turn-around story.  It has been profitable for the last few years.

Team Development

“The feedback from the workshop is that Sandra Barnes is an energetic, enthusiastic facilitator who kept the group progressing in a dynamic fashion.” – A Human Resource Manager, Client’s Company

An IT group in the company lacked priorities and felt that they spent time constantly fighting fires as opposed to finishing projects.  In general, they were friendly peers, but did not know when or how to ask for help. In a weekend retreat, this group learned the basics of being a team, learn problem-solving/decision making tools, worked through internal conflicts.  They completed their workshop by having representatives of other company functions joined them to work through real-life scenarios.  As a result, they left with new priorities, a better understanding with the other company functions and action plans which helped them stay on track.

After working together for a period of time and receiving some core team practice skills, Copper Rise Consulting took all production and administrative teams of a large steel mill through team building retreats to learn to appreciate differences, resolve growing conflicts, improve communications and move out of the "storming" stages of team development.  All teams developed their team charters and recommitted to working more effectively together.  This plant is viewed as a model empowered work force within its industry.

Facilitation

“After our first meeting with Sandy, we changed our format to the Scenario Planning Process and held what has been classified by both our internal employee attendees and external board members as the most successful and entertaining sessions our Company had ever held.” CEO, Client Company

When contacted by a client to facilitate their annual planning retreat, Copper Rise Consulting suggested the use of scenarios to create dialog and creative problem solving. Management succession was an issue the client wished to address.  Through the use of a humorous, but realistically written stories, the retreat participants not only developed some creative solutions, but they also uncovered many other areas of concerns.  An action plan develop during the workshop has since addressed these concerns.

Using the Scenario Planning Process, Copper Rise Consulting led a planning project to help a community agency develop potential futures for the county.  By training and leading a group of community volunteers, interviewing over 150 people fromall segments of the community, drafting and editing stories and presenting the results to a variety of groups, the three different futures have been used by a variety of organizations to create contingency approaches.

“You did an incredible job of facilitation, in particular at the interview session here, and with this last ad hoc group.”  Participant in the Pathways 2020 Scenario Planning Project
